The 5 Basic Rules of Pickleball (+ one)

Pickleball is a rapidly growing sport, blending elements from tennis, badminton, and ping-pong.

Whether you're picking up a paddle for the first time or you've been playing for a while, it's important to get a good handle on the basic rules so everyone can enjoy a fair game.

Here are the five key rules of pickleball, plus an essential safety tip about protecting your eyes!

1. The Serve

Every game begins with an underhand serve, which is hit diagonally across the court.

The ball has to clear the kitchen (or non-volley zone) and land within the opponent’s service area.

Just make sure to keep both feet behind the baseline when serving.

2. The Double-Bounce Rule

After the serve, both teams must let the ball bounce once before returning it.

This “double-bounce rule” keeps the game balanced and prevents players from making quick volleys right off the serve.

3. The Kitchen Rule (Non-Volley Zone)

The kitchen is the 7-foot space on either side of the net.

Players aren’t allowed to volley the ball while standing in the kitchen.

This rule prevents powerful, close-range shots, making the game more strategic.

4. Scoring

Games are played to 11 points, but you need to win by at least two points.

Only the team that’s serving can score.

If the receiving side wins a rally, they don’t get points but do earn the serve.

5. Faults

Faults happen when:

  • The ball lands outside the court boundaries
  • It hits the net and doesn’t go over
  • Someone volleys from inside the kitchen
  • The ball bounces more than once on one side

Now that you’ve got the basics down, let’s talk about a crucial tip for staying safe while you play!

RULE # 6

(Not really a "rule," but a great suggestion.)

6. Protective Eyewear is Key

Pickleball can get pretty fast-paced, with balls flying at high speeds, so protecting your eyes is a must.

Wearing protective eyewear, like safety sunglasses, can help prevent serious eye injuries.

Not only do they safeguard you from impact, but they also protect your eyes from harmful UV rays, especially during outdoor games.

For the best results, go for polarized sports sunglasses that offer a snug fit and excellent durability.

Look for ones with impact-resistant lenses to keep your eyes safe during those high-energy rallies.

In summary, understanding the rules of pickleball is key to enjoying the sport, but don’t forget about your safety.

Investing in quality protective eyewear will help keep your vision sharp and your game strong.

After all, safety should always come first when you're on the court!
